Please help identify this weed

I don't know if this is native or exotic, but it's definitely invasive! It's a low-growing vine-like groundcover. Sorry I couldn't find a better example - most of the vines have lost their leaves by now. The vine which seems to radiate from a central point is dark red. The purple "spikes" grow sideways, not tall like loosestrife, and I've never seen them open into flowers so they may be more of a seedpod. This is growing *everywhere* we cleared for our house lot 2 yrs ago, mostly in full sun on south end of our lawn but also along north slope and I've even seen some along the wooded edges of our driveway. How do I get rid of it?

Polygonum caespitosum or similar. Pulling before they go to seed would be good. I'm not into herbicides...

Here is a link that might be useful: Polygonum caespitosum

Thanks! I knew once I posted here I'd get an answer right away. I've been googling invasive vine purple for months thrying to find an image that matched! I can pull some from the lawn, but we've got so much of this (outside basement door and on north slope by garage esp, since we didn't plant grass in those areas) that I don't know if I can keep up with it, so I'll have to call UCONN to see what they recommend.

yup -- also known as smart weed. It is shallowly rooted and easy to pull.
