Here's an overview of Buttonbush from the Kemper Center/MO Bot Garden(MOBOT).

While many native plants/shrubs/trees prefer moist to bog conditions, I have found that they are adaptable to garden culture, and perform well under less than ideal conditions.
The only caveat is, that they receive adequate moisture until the roots are well established. That can be accomplished by watering regularly, (I use a soaker hose) and applying several inches of mulch.

As an example of survivability, I found 2 small American Snowbells (Styrax americanus) in a forest sink, during a sanctioned rescue at a construction site. They came home in a plastic bag, with very litle soil attached to the roots. Not having the time to plant both immediately, I sat one on an unused portion of my concrete driveway, under an Oak tree, among some potted plants and trees, where it was forgotten. The following spring, it began to grow along with the potted plants. As an experiment, I left it there. After a few years, it is now about 8ft. tall and the roots are spread out on the driveway, nurtured only by composted leaves from the Oak and receives moisture only when it rains or I remember to water it.

I would plant the Buttonbush in an area where the soil retains some moisture and I believe it will adapt and perform well.

Thanks for the info and link, looks like I can plant it where I want, which is what I was hoping for. That's funny how the snowbell survived! I would have given it one week tops before it kicked the bucket.

I guess that part of the driveway really is unused if there is an 8 ft tree growing on it!

I think regular garden soil and average moisture is fine, but I would give it lots of sun for good flower production. i think at least half a day would be advisable, more if you can.

I grow a button bush on the edge of my raingarden. It doesn't get many buttons, because its in quite a bit of shade. But it grows fast, I have pruned it back on several occaisions, because it does grow quite large.

I got mine from a cutting I took off a bush at the boat landing.

Well that makes it easier! I guess it goes into the full sun spot. I was back and forth with the sun/shade, since I saw a few comments where they gave it a sun to part shade range, but I do want the buttons, so sun it is.

I'm glad it's a good grower, because I'm a pruner. I usually have the clippers with me and my poor plants are always losing a branch here and there.

Well, I've looked at the bush in disappointment 'cuz it didn't have buttons. Then I lopped off a few branches tossed them in the compost pile and then I see buttons on the branches that I tossed into the pile... aarrgghh!

hah hah. That's something that would (and probably will) happen to me!
