Plant ID?

Can anybody help me identify this plant? I found it growing
beside a country road here in central Mississippi. It is
about 4 feet tall and wide and the larger stems are red.
It has been blooming over a month now and I would love
to know what it is. Thanks for any help you can give me.

RE: Plant ID?

I think it to be one of the Persicarias, AKA "smartweed". Some are also in genus Polygonum. Also some resemblance to Physostegia-Obedient plant. Not entirely sure from pic.

RE: Plant ID?

Thanks for the help! I think you are right about it being smartweed.

Looks like Polygonum pensylvanicum to me, which is pretty common around here in c. Mississippi.

Here is a link that might be useful: Smartweed
