Thanks to the $2 sale at Mountain Valley Growers (which has been extended, btw!) and a very nice GW trader, I have added some salvias, bringing my total to about 45 varieties. I think I have officially run out of space in my garden! It's easy to germinate, and self-sows. In addition to the conditions you mention, you will need alkaline soil (dolomitic limestone is great) and some duff from conifers (chopped up pine needles, but juniper is better) in the soil mix. It's called cedar break sage because it's found in breaks in the Edwards Plateau, These are spots on the plateau at its edge where streams have eroded a pathway, with the caliche soil breaking into boulders in the shade of Texas junipers. Duff gathers in the pockets, and these damp spots are where it can be found. I visited such a location back in the late 70s. I replicated the conditions using hemlock needles mixed with dolomitic limestone in a small garden at my parents home in western Massachusetts the next year with great success.

The short answer is no. I've had Amistad for about three or perhaps four years. That's as long as they have been on the market here in the USA. However, there are hummingbird gardeners who are in zone 8, or perhaps lower, who report that the tops do freeze, but then they come back in the spring. So, you should be okay even if we get a freeze. I have just put four more of these into the ground, having grown them from cuttings. They look very happy. The hummingbirds love them; they like to be deadheaded, but still bloom rather continuously even if they are left alone. They start blooming when very small and never stop. I've grown a lot of salvias and Amistad and Miniata are my favorites. I'm going to take some cuttings from Phillis Fancy soon. She's another very pretty and hardy salvia. She has white blooms coming out of lavender stems that the hummers like.
