Starting from scratch on 8000 SF suburban lot

Hi all, I recently bought my first home and it's about as close to a blank slate as you could have. Just under 8000 sf of St. Augustine grass and dandelions, almost perfectly flat, one oak tree, one loquat tree.

I'm very interested in converting this barren wasteland into a wildlife-friendly native garden with pond, and frankly, this is the first time in my life that I've really been able to indulge my "gardening itch." Up to now, it's been houseplants in pots on an apartment patio, so while an 8000sf lot may seem tiny to some of you guys, it's a little overwhelming to me.

I'm studying it this winter to see what pops up during the no-mow season and I have some resources, but I wonder if you have any suggestions or ideas about getting started.
