Too early for forcing Forsythia?

Anyone have some advice? I cut a big bunch of Forsythia a week ago and stuck 'em in a vase of water, thinking they'd bloom by now. they're just sitting there, with fat looking buds, and two tiny specks of green, not even emerged leaves, in the whole bunch. Is there something I should be doing, or did I jump the season? Thanks.
