veggie gardening in 'dog dirt'

There's a really sunny place in my yard that was once my dogs' "spot". Anyone have information on how to long the soil takes to neutralize, or how to safely treat the soil, so eating the crop doesn't sicken me? Or, should I just think perennials (I have several beds already).

Sadly my best friend passed on this winter.

Dog food (or table scraps?)may have contained animal by-products... which in turn he/she deposited it in that 'spot'. Go ahead and plant there.... if you come up with mutant tomatoes with chicken lips, you can amaze us with the pics and generate great discussion. :o)
