Planting Perennials??
| | |
Posted by Cricketm z7, L.I., NY (My Page) on Thu, Apr 14, 05 at 16:08
| Is it warm enough to plant perennials on Long Island, NY, zone 7 -- I have been working with my soil and it seems quite warm. I added lite soil, humus, manure and peat moss. Do I have to wait until after April 20th??? What about rose bushes. I ordered two Red Eden's from Wayside Gardens and they should be arriving any day now.
Thank you in anticipation to a reply... |

I'm afraid I know next to nothing about roses, but I think you have to wait until around May. You can go ahead and plant those perennials. Have fun! Lynn |

| April 20th is last frost date, that's really for annuals. You can really plant any hardy perennial once the ground is warm enough to work. Just make sure they are hardened off. Don't know much about roses not being a rose person but planted two for my wife the other day, kinda hoping it's too early for 'em ;o) |

| April 20 is NOT the last frost date in many areas of LI. The last average frost date is sometime AFTER April 20. Be careful with that. BUT, you should be fine planting perennials and roses now. |

| Thank you all for such wonderful responses. I planted lots of perennials today and two Red Eden Roses. I plan to plant more on Sunday. Thanks again! |
