First Eelgrass Harvest

| Sunday combined a nice south wind, and a bay crowded with motor-boaters, to provide a moderate flow of Eelgrass to my end of the canal. Here's the yield from an easy half-hour by the water:
It's almost two cubic yards of concentrated nitrogen and minerals. I use it for tea (for the plants), compost and mulch. It'll sit on the boardwalk for a week or so. I'll hose it down with fresh water, if there isn't enough rain. If I turn it every other day, it dries in just 3-4 days, at which point I'll shred some to add to the compost and brew the tea. I'll cut some with hedge shears, to use as fine compost, and some will go down as-is for coarse compost or lasagna layers.
A gift from the sea. If you see some piled up on your part of the coast, it's worth bringing it home. |

| Wow Sailfish! It slowed me down a little, but I could still read it fairly easily! It's humbling (and fascinating) to discover that the mind works in a fashion totally different from what I've always assumed. Claire |

Doesn't the eelgrass contain salt? I would have bet seaweed would be a no no in the garden. You have had no problems? Howie |

| Actually, most of the salt in Eelgrass is on the surface, and It gets rinsed several times before I use it. Seaweed has been used as fertilizer and mulch for centuries, all over the world. |
