Garden Patio

Three years ago we filled in the inground pool. Looking out the window at the mess was disheartening. Finally we decided to do something with it and came up with the garden patio idea. Here's a shot of the finished patio. The unfinished circular structure is going to be a wood fired pizza oven. I'm working on getting topsoil to the perimeter for gardening. It's no secret that by the time thats done I will have missed the "Spring Start". So It will be slow going to achive the garden part this year. I'll be looking here for ideas and help with plants for gardening. Planting is brand new to me and I was born with a "Black Thumb". So I can use all the help I can get.

Howie, I love it! That's the best use I've ever seen for an inground pool (I used to keep live bait in one.). The shape of the patio is fantastic, and it's a perfect foundation for container plants. The fence is just screaming for flowering vines.

Two suggestions:

1. Start getting a good grip on your sun exposures, to help you select what types of plants you'll need.

2. Check out the Winter Sowing Forum and FAQ, linked below, for tips on how to stuff that garden with (almost)free plants. If you start planning, and collecting recyclable containers and seeds now, you'll have more plants than you can imagine one year from now.

Oh yeah, one more thing. While you're getting topsoil and organic amendments into the beds, keep them covered with a good thick mulch. You can easily rake it aside to work on a bed, and you'll save yourself a lot of weeding and soil erosion.

Actually, I'm interested in your pizza oven! (I answered your other post so feel absolved of a sensible reply on this one!).

What is your pizza oven made of? Preformed cement? Or cement blocks, laid in layers . . . . And what will you do with it next???

Cheers!

Clair,
You can find out all you want about the Pizza oven at http://www.fornobravo.com/
I have a thread and pics at the Newbie section of the forum. I'm just as excited about entering the world of gardening as I am about the oven. I needed an excuse to get out in the yard and I think I've found one...or two!

Howie I just had a look at the Fornobravo website. It's amazing! And I looked at some of your pictures of how you built your stand, it's really good. You have taken such care over it, you will get excellent pizzas I'm sure!

Thank you so much for pointing me at the forno site, I am going to be spending quite a lot of time I think, we have talked a lot about building a pizza oven but a)never got round to it and b)weren't really sure how to do it anyway!

This is great!
Happy building, and good luck with completing your projects!
Cheers

Whatever you decide to plant, don't over-look ornamental grasses. They should be included in the scheme. They add height, texture and visual interest, even during the long winter months.
