Great all around book - A Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch. I believe she was from Connecticut. It's the first book I reach for for everything from improving the soil to perennials to disease control.

C. L Fornari, who lives on Cape Cod, has a great book for coastal gardening...can't remember the name, though!

Sunset publishes Northeastern Garden Book, edited by Anne Halpin, which I've found to be useful. (They also publish Sunset Northeastern Landscaping Book, edited by Ken Druse - which I don't have, but which is probably good ... Druse also has a book entitled, Natural Garden/Natural Shade which is just gorgeous). I've also gotten a lot of use out of Home Landscaping: Northeast Region : Including Southeast Canada (Home Landscaping) by Roger Holmes, Rita Buchanan and also New England Gardener's Guide (Gardener's Guides (Cool Springs Press)) by Jacqueline Heriteau, Holly Hunter Stonehill. It doesn't cover as many types of plants, but does give companion planting suggestions, which I really enjoy. I find myself turning to these books again and again.
