I got to Mahoney's!

Well I just this minute got back from Mahoney's, in Allston (Brighton?). What a nice little garden centre! They had some lovely plants, of course I wanted to buy Everything! But constrained by money, time frame, and public transport, limited myself quite admirably I think!

I was interested to see that a lot of the prices were similar to Home Depot. The bacopa plants were I think the same price (should have made notes, I can never remember figures) but in fact were not as nice as the ones I got in HD. The 5" pot size plants were all mainly $5, which I thought was pretty ok. So I got a lovely fuchsia "ShadowDancer Violette" for that price, also a helychrysum and a sweet potato vine. Also a dozen of the trailing blue lobelia which I was searching for.

Mission accomplished! I enjoyed the ride too, Red Line to Harvard, No. 86 bus to the garden centre, then back the same way, in lovely sun too! Now I'd better get planting, it's supposed to rain later I believe!

If you somehow find the means make sure you visit the Mahoneys in Winchester. It's mind boggeling! The place is huge. I'm not a plant nut and I can spend a couple hours there. On occasion I'll bring one of my plant minded friends and allways have trouble convincing them it's time to go.

Sailfish I think I'd have a serious crying fit if I went there! The girl that served me yesterday said their Winchester branch was a day trip in its-self, I just wouldn't trust myself to not buy stuff which I know I shouldn't buy as I'm only here a while. Saying that, it's always just lovely to see all the ideas that are presented at these places, just in their small branch yesterday I got some very interesting ideas. It's all food for thought!

Claire,
I was thinking of you last Friday as I walked by Pemberton's on Mass (Massachusetts) Ave. in Cambridge. They had a lot of plants, all great-looking and robust. And lots of beautiful pots and ornaments. You might still want to take a trip over there on the bus just in cast there is something you "need" but didn't get at Mahoney's. ;)

Hi Cady how's things? Pembertons, I remember that being mentioned when I first started posting here and asking lots of pesky questions! I really enjoyed my trip "over the other side of the river" on Saturday, a little "just in case" trip to Cambridge would be most pleasant . . . . . thanks for reminding me!!!

Hi Claire...
I was so tempted to "browse" in Pemberton's, but had to go back to work. Sigh. Yes, there was a discussion about it when you first posted an enquiry about garden centers you could access on public transportation. To get to Pemberton's, you take the Red Line to Harvard Square and take the bus up Mass. Ave. The shop is near the Davis Square Red Line stop, too.

Do you have one of those grocery trolleys -- the collapsible 2-wheel metal wire carts? You can get a lot of stuff into them, and take them on the "T." Paired with a backpack, you could carry an entire garden home! :)

I'm glad you got what you needed at Mahoney's. The garden bug makes us travel far to hunt for plants, and it appears that you had a successful "hunt."

Cady I wouldn't trust myself with a cart!!! Though I have admired them in the street. The trouble is that with my stay here being relatively short and money being (ha, as always!) pretty tight, I just don't want to spend too much. I already feel guilty about what I've bought . . . . but I don't buy cosmetics or clothes like some people do, so I try and tell myself a few $$$ on plants is ok really!

And I have found some stuff on the pavement too, which has been really brilliant! One lovely big clump of chives, a pretty glazed bowl shaped pot, and some very nice teraccota pots too. I love the thought that I've rescued them from being crushed up in the rubbish lorry! Kerb shopping I've seen it called . . .

lol! I've done plenty of what we call "trash picking" too. Once, I found some gorgeous baskets that someone had tossed. On trash pickup day, those of us with no shame drive or walk around the affluent communities to see what we can scavange for the garden. "Kerb shopping." heh heh. I like that!

In NYC it was called "dumpster diving"...

I introduced my builder in MA to the term when I asked if I could take some materials from his trash can.

Oh it's great though, getting nice stuff and rescuing it, if I had a car I would certainly go to a richer neighbourhood and have a scout around! Dumpster diving, that's good! But what a waste if some of this stuff was to get crushed up. We've only been here a few months but already we found a set of 3 matching coffee tables (nice ones), another coffee table (fit for outside, but still ok), a brand new wrought iron wine rack, a big lamp, weird but nice, er . . . my lovely flower pots just this week, a big trough thing for mixing soil mixes up in . . . . fantastic! I just need one more table lamp and I'm all set! Got to laugh really - all things come to he who waits!

"Dumpster diving " is another popular name around here, too, for this active sport!

I have a big stack of old-fashioned windows - the kind with the multiple ligths/panes - I got that way. People put in vinyl replacement windows and throw out treasures. I have enough windows to make a big cold frame or small greenhouse. :)

RE: I got to Mahoney's!

Old windows are really good aren't they?! When we moved to Ireland we took over a pile of old windows, my fella worked next door to a manufacturer and installer of plastic windows, the dumpster outside had all the old windows in it. Once we knew we were heading off he started trawling for nice windows, we got enough to make a whole sunroom on our cottage! It does look a little "homestead-ey" but it's my favourite room in the house! And once the outside is painted up it will look fab. I put up a picture of the sun room, it was virtually finished by fall 04, complete with lovely plants and stuff, but I don't have those pics with me. Drat! You'll just have to take my word for it how nice we made those recycled frames look! And this pic only shows 1/2 the space we made.

I wanted to make cold frames too, and there are some left over that are just right. Will get to it when we return!

Here is a link that might be useful: Recycled window frames

That room looks FABULOUS. It's obvious why it's your favorite. It gives me hope that my "pipe dream" greenhouse project will have such wonderful results. Scavanging for treasures is worth the effort (and potential social awkwardness!!!).

RE: I got to Mahoney's!

Thank-you Cady! It was a lot of effort, I can tell you! I went to work and earned money, he stayed at home and was house-husband and builder!

Yes, your greenhouse Will be Worth it! And the social awkwardness, well let's all just shrug that off! Mind you, looking at your gardenweb page it doesn't seem like you are going to have much room for a greenhouse. Your lot sounds really crowded what with all the bamboos and stuff and then creatures too! Do you collect eggs from the poultry? It all sounds really good, I love the idea of keeping hens. A lot of work though, I know. How on earth do you find the time to post on here too?!

Time? Who has time? I post on GardenWeb when I should be doing some other work. heehee

Yes, my small lot is jam-packed, but I seem to find ways to make more stuff fit. But as you well know, gardens never stay the same over time. We're always re-working them. I'm having my chicken coop rebuilt to a more efficient size and shape, and that will leave me room for a small greenhouse. It just takes scheming and planning.

Chickens are easy to care for and don't need too much space. It's mainly a matter of keeping their home clean, safe and draft-free, giving the chooks space to scratch for bugs and take dust baths, and making sure they have fresh, clean food and water daily. Then they make eggs! I have more than I can eat, even after giving many away to neighbors and family. If you would like free, fresh, organically "grown" eggs from happy free range chooks, give a shout and I'll meet you on the T with a batch! Bring a large basket. :)

RE: I got to Mahoney's!

Cady what a lovely offer, that is so nice of you! (And sorry not to have spotted it earlier, I have only just realized that I need to make a note of all the threads that I post a message on, and then I can make sure to re-visit each one and get all my replies back!).

You can’t beat fresh "home made" eggs, can you? My Dad kept chickens when I was a kid and eggs have never been the same, though I reckon yours would be! I seem to remember the chickens being able to perch quite high, so perhaps with your chicken coop you are going up more to give yourself more ground for the greenhouse – please post a picture or two when you have started on your project because I’d love to see how you get on!

All the best with it

Claire.

I'll put photos on my album page when the coop is ready. In the meantime, the fresh egg offer still stands. Just drop me a private message via my "My Page" if you get a hankering for fresh eggs!
