What's a nice N.Eastern tree that gets less then 35 wide/65 tall?

Hi,

I'm looking for a tree that would fit the following description:

-Native to the Northeastern states (such as NJ)
-Does not get taller then 50-60' & not more then 30' wide
-Has a medium to fast growth rate
-Preferably an evergreen, though not necessarily, but one which will allow sunlight to pass through some of the folliage so I can grow ferns and hostas underneath.

Although not native, I was considering the dawn redwood since it allows enough sunlight to pass through, is less then 30' wide, and is very attractive, but I'm afraid that it would get very tall (70-100 feet tall).

Thank you.

Steven
