Gardenias - To pull or not to pull

So i was prepared to pull out a couple of hardy gardenias that never recovered from the harsh winter we had. They were planted about three years ago and were doing great until now. So as I went to pull them I noticed some blooming down by the root on both. Its been pretty warm here for a while and these plants normally are fully recovered at this point. What should I do?
