leafcutter bees!!

Those pesky leafcutter bees are having a field day with my roses! They seem to especially love my Double Delight. I know they are beneficial for pollination, but the rose leaves look so .... sad!

I have a question about this though. I use Bayer 2 in 1 systemic fertilizer on my roses. Will this hurt the bees?

Hi Karen
Does it say its safe for birds on the packaging? I've never used it, so I'm not familiar with it, are you sure the bees are doing the damage? My double delight is blooming nicely but the leaves are full of black spot this year due to all the rain we've had.

Oh yes, it's leafcutter bees alright - perfect little half circles all around the edges of the leaves! The roses are blooming beautifully, though. No black spot on it yet, and I'm hoping against hope that it doesn't get it. But with all the rain lately......

Most systemics need to be ingested to kill off the pests.
Leafcutters I think, just saw through the leaf, but I am not certain if they eat the leaf. Look on the ground
around the roses...see any remains?

If you have an extension service in your area they should be contacted to see if it will harm the bees. Even if they dont eat it they may use it in their hives.
I understand bayer makes a good product mabey you should contact them by email with your question.

Are you using the spray or the granules?

The important thing about the Bayer systemic spray is to apply it when the bees are not active, i.e. either very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon.

The wet spray will kill bees. Once the spray is dry (within an hour or less) and absorbed into the plant the bees are safe. This information is from the label (by memory).

If you're putting the granules on the soil, it shouldn't affect the bees at all.

I've used the spray on lilies for several years, and the bees have been fine.

Leave the bees alone. they use the leaves to line their nests. I just let them be and eventually they go away. That is one insect I do not mind having visit my roses.
