can you post a picture or give a description? Are they doing damage?

Aphids many find that water will wash them off. I have tried that but didn't work. I have to use a spray.

I have not joined the digital age yet, so no picture. They actually look more brown than black-I can see their nasty little bug legs. I did try hosing those bad boys off, but to no avail. Is there an organic recommendation? THANKS!

I can't think of anything organic except for the water. They will kill the plants so I would use a good aphid control spray once should do it.

You can try spritzing them with a 1 to 10 solution of mild dish detergent to water. I remembering being told (don't know if it was Grandma or if I read it here last year)that it will kill all six legged bugs. Another one I remember (also can't recall the source) is a pinch of chewing tobacco steeped in boiling water.

I have heard about the soap and water, and the tobacco juice works great on tomato plants. Way back when, farmers grew a small tobacco crop for this reason. I have seen the same little bugs on several plants, never gave them any thought they don't seem to inflict any harm. If you use tobacco juice, use Redman. You can get a ton of spit from that stuff, but watch out; it tastes nasty and make sure you have a seat nearby because the buzz you get from a mouthful of that stuff is intense. Let us know what works and any plant damage if any.

I've noticed those bugs on only one of my perennial sunflowers. It's the only one of the bunch that has double flowers. The singles have been left untouched. sheila

I have to say that I haven't noticed any damage to the flowers, and those critters are STILL there! L. |

Lynn, I have had those on some plants, I put about tablespoon of dawn dish detergent to a quart of water and sprayed the plants. I think that did the trick, creepy aren't they. Stella |

Yuk is right! I think that the soap and water mixture suffocates them, right? If you are gardening organic, you may want to try some NEEM, too. I'd be very, very careful about the tobacco because of Tobacco Mosaic Virus (which I am now learning WAY too much about). You can devastate a whole crop of vegetables or a perennial garden if that takes hold. I have a hosta on its way out to be tested for it right now. Never heard of it until a nurseryman told me it looks like that's what the hosta has.....and I don't smoke! Yikes! Best of luck - let us know what works for you. Pam

I can't see anything on my rudbeckias (haven't looked too closely either), but the flowers are eaten right off to the center. They are just starting to bloom and looks like something is lying in wait for them to open. Any suggestions?
