Trumpet Vine - Invasive in Sand?

Posted by beachsandra z7 NY (My Page) on

In June, I planted several trumpet vines (bought in Costco) at the base of a 4' wood picket fence and they are doing well to date. I am looking for fence coverage, but nothing too high to block the sun from the rest of my yard. I know it is considered invasive and 'thug' plant in some areas - but does it go that crazy when grown in sand (my yard is sand - I uses a bag of dirt when I planted the trumpets)? I know from experience that a lot of plants that are considered invasive in my zone 7 are well-mannered when grown in sand ....probably 'cause of lack of nutrients. Does anyone have experience with this ? If it looks like they will eat my yard or be a real hassle in 5 years, I'll probably try to get rid of them now. Thanks

In my experience, trumpet vines (mine I think are the native/wild type - not from a store) are quite vigorous here on LBI, NJ. They throw out babies on runners which if you keep yanking them out, they aren't a problem. My neighbor and I have them growing up on dead trees and they have filled them out nicely. Good luck!

Sandra,
Trumpet vine is invasive in cement, but if you keep pulling out the vines that appear when in bloom its awesome.
