I put down some compost from the town pile last year to expand an existing flower bed. This year, among the volunteer sunflowers from the bird feeder I found four plants of a species that I don't know. Each has heart - shaped basal leaves with toothed edges and several 2" very pale pink, bell-shaped hanging flowers dangling from the leaf axils on a central stalk. The flower throats have dark spots (similar to a Digitalis but there is no ruffle along the petal lip). The flowers are single and the petals seem to be fused into one; there are several blossoms on each plant. The stems are dark-colored. I've looked through the Audubon and Taylor wildflower books, as well as Taylor and several other annual and perennial books with no luck, but perhaps I just missed it. Help with ID please!

Flowers are the wrong shape and size -- really bell-shaped and about 2" long and 1" wide with fused petals and pointy scalloped edges; I have Campanula in the yard to compare. BTW, the basal leaves I mentioned actually belong to another volunteer right next to the plant in question; the mystery plant has lance shaped leaves with toothed edges. Help!

Maybe a clematis such as c. integrifolia or c. texensis? Scroll down near the bottom. -Claire
Here is a link that might be useful: Clematis varieties

You might try looking on the Connecticut Botanical Society web page for a match - they have a lot of great pictures.

I checked the Conn. Botanical site and it's not there under either pink or white. Sorry. Someone I talked to here has it and it's a perennial (or it just reseeds freely). (-:

I also looked up the Clematis -- that's not it either. My plant isn't a vine. Sorry.

I've been looking on the Web since I posted. With apologies to Donn, it MAY be some kind of Campanula, possibly C. punctata; every time I get close to a picture, the link(s) go down. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help.

Clematis integrifolia is not a vine, it's a sprawly plant. -Claire
