I found the smelly bushes!!

| ...I just don't know what they are. I was driving near my house and drove past that wonderful smell. Since I wasn't on I-95 for a change, I stopped to identify them. I could never figure out why something that seemingly did not flower could be so fragrant. Now it makes sense. When I walked up to the bushes, I found that they are in bloom, but the blooms are a faint green, so they blend in with the bushes. Whizzing by on I-95 at 80, I mean 55mph, you'd never see the flowers. It looks like some type of Lilac. It's a Lilac shaped "flower", but the flower looks more like a big seed. I'll take some pics and report back. |

| Could it be privet? The local hedges are blooming now. But the tiny blooms are more white than green. Exquisite scent as I bike around the area. Small glossy dark green leaves? |

Faint green bloom? sounds like sumac.
I wouldn't rule out Clethera tho. |

| They're big round bushes, about 7' tall or so. I'm going over there tomorrow to get pictures. |

| Are you referring to Russian Olive by any chance? They have silvery-green leaves and clusters of light green fruit pods that look like nuts. They have small yellow flowers that are somewhat inconspicuous and have an intensely sweet smell. I personally find the smell to be so sickly sweet that it is nauseating. This species is very invasive which is why you see it growing wild everywhere. |
