HELP! First Year Gardening

| Hello! I apologize if I am posting in the wrong area, but I am seem to be having a lot of trouble with the site and I couldn't get any other page to open. I live in MA and this is my first year doing any real gardening. I bought a little house a couple years ago and planted impatients around a tree in my front yard the first couple of years, but this year I tore up half my yard where there was crab grass and bought 32 different perenials and went to town. It's about 60 feet long along a fence and 3 to 4 feet wide and I used a stone white scaloped boarder and down the end near my deck I build a little cobble stone wall and I love to sit on the deck drinking coffee early in the morning and just staring at it. It has been a great project! I had about 2 plants die on me and a few seemed to go into shock and then recover. The roses have really taken off, they are beautiful. My hydrengas have turned a yucky color so I read about the acidity and alkaline soil depending on the color so I bought the necessary bags of products, but still have had no luck with the color. I just put it around the roots, and I'm not even sure that was the right way to do it; there were not directions. My black eyed susans are dying and I hear they are supposed to be one of the easiest plants to grow. I've tried everything and nothing has seemed to work. I tend to probably water them all too often so I've toned that down and have been reading about what each plant needs instead of putting them all on the same schedule. I also planted a weigela and that is starting to look a bit peaked so I am worried about what to do about that as well. I have pictures of them, but I guess I can't post them. I just keep reading info on line and I have found this site incredibly insiteful, but as I've said I can't seem to open any pages lately. Any feedback is extremely WELCOME! Maybe I over did it with starting so big with so many different flowers, but I love it and I find it so relaxing and satisfying. I get so bummed when I've weeded, taken off any dead blooms, etc. and find nothing else to do. They're all like my babies. Thank you for putting up with my babbling - this is my first post and again any help/feedback is most welcome. Thanks! Mary Jay |

| Uh oh! I think you're going to become hooked ;o) Maybe a good general gardening book? At least it would give you something to do while you enjoy your coffee in the garden? The Well Tended Perennial Garden is a good one and you might find it at abebooks.com or half.com for very little. My greatest advice to you, it's a learning process, relax and enjoy it and gardening will give you a lifetime of pleasure as it has me. Good Luck! |
