Conifer suggestions, please!

Hi! I'm looking to create a mini-woodland in a corner of my yard. I'm looking for some nice, pyrimidal, Christmas tree-looking conifers. Do I ask too much? What are some of your favorites and where have you purchased them (on Long Island or via the Internet)? THANKS!
Lynn

I love Blue Spruce, love the color and the shape..

And I think our birdies will like to nest in them over the winter!

Blue spruce get awfully big, awfully fast. If it's a mini-woodland you're after, you might be looking for something that does not get too big.

My favorite conifer, in my garden, anyway, is an old "cedar" (really a juniperis) that I think helps set the sense of place. They are abundant all over coastal New England area and usually don't get too enormous. Yeah, I've got a long row of spruce, and a big umbrella pine, and several assorted dwarf evergreens with interesting foliage, but I'd trade them all for more full-sized junipers.

I'm about to plant some black hills spruce in my yard to create a bit of a woodland setting. I've read that they have a moderate growth rate and not too wide a spread at maturity (compared to a Norway spruce). They are very hardy, also. Hope I don't hear bad things about them from other forum members, :-(

Well, we've changed our minds, and are planting douglas firs instead.

Bcooney...How come you changed your mind and where are you purchasing the Firs? THANKS!

Well, I consulted extensively with the most patient nursery man on LI, Nick at Walsh's in Dix Hills. (That's where I'm buying them--they were the most helpful and patient with me). The original design plan was for Norway Spruce. I felt they'd get too big, too fast. Nick felt that anything maintained would work out OK, but still I was hesitant about Norway.

He wasn't that familiar with Black Hills. He gets them, but only the very small (less than 4ft) size.

He suggested the Firs, because they take to trimming easily, are soft to the touch (small kids here) and are beautiful. Tney don't get as wide as Norways, either. They're being planted this Wed.!

Bcooney...I know where Walsh's is-Deer Park Ave! But...I found lovely conifers at Stables in East Moriches, which is close to my home. They had Firs and Spruce. I am looking forward to planting!!
