wanted: western ma swap 2005 schedule

ElaineW

It's time to start getting ready for the Spring. Here is the plan for the upcoming season. Just a few changes from last year's post, mainly the addition of the Wish List. That seemed to encourage people to bring more of those special plants and varieties. It gets better every season!

Where?

253 Warren Wright Rd. Belchertown, MA 01007

When? The 1st and 3rd Tuesdays during the months of MayÂSept., 2005

May 3, May 17 (Not on May 31st)

June 7, June 21

July 5, July 19

August 2, August 16 (Not on Aug.30th)

September 6, September 20

6:00pm arrival/prep, 6:15 plant swapping begins (usually done by 7:30) Rain or Shine.

What to Bring? Perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, cuttings, fresh cut flowers, bulbs, seeds, etc.

$1.00 dues to cover costs- including a drawing for a plant. Bring a box or bucket in which to bring home your plants.

How Does This Work? At 6:00 people will arrive with their items to swap. The items will be placed on the

ground in the area where weÂll sit. You may want to bring a chair in case there are not enough. At 6:15

weÂll name off all of the items to be swapped. It is very helpful if the items are labeled. Many bring shopping

bags or buckets with freshly dug plants labeled with the plant name. ItÂs not necessary to pot the plants youÂll

bring- but you should try to keep the roots from drying out. YOU CAN BRING AS MANY OR AS FEW PLANTS AS YOUÂD LIKE. SOME GARDENERS ARE JUST STARTING AND MAY NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO SWAP. THAT IS OK! Many seasoned gardeners have more than enough to share and would rather give them away than throw them in the compost. There are many plants that do poorly unless they are divided regularly (irises, daisies, phlox, etc.) This is a great way to trade them for plants you may not have.

As soon as all of the plants are named people will be told to take their first pick. Each pick is a plant, not a full

container. The first pick is offered to those who have brought an item from the "Wish List" that is kept of

swappers wishes. Even if the person who wanted the plant is not there if you brought a wish list item then you

can be part of the first pick. If you are the recipient of a wish list plant then that is considered your first pick. After everyone is done people will step back and then the second round will begin. Everyone is included in this round and all of the rest of the picks. This will be repeated as long as there are items left. You may leave with a couple plants or with many depending on the contributions that week. WeÂll finish with a raffle for a beautiful plant.

Other Notes: No dogs or smoking please. If you bring children try to make sure they are not disruptive.

Parking will be along Warren Wright Rd. - please be careful not to block the road or my neighbors driveways.

Feel free to spread the word, everyone is welcome.

Come a little early if youÂd like to browse through my gardens.

    Hi Kathy,
Yes, I will add pink forget-me-not to the wish list. I didn't even know there were such a thing. Someone told me they counted over 100 people. They just kept coming and coming. What a blast.

Is the wish list going to be updated in this thread before each swap?

  • ElaineW
    Original Author

Yes. I think what I will do is get the list from the swappers at the swap, add to it from email requests and then post it one week before the swap. So this Tuesday will be the day I post it and send it out via email. If you would like me to add you to my email list just let me know. I am very happy with the way the wish list is working out. Almost every one of the plants people were looking for at the first swap were brought. Gardeners are such generous people.

How big is this swap? Do interesting plants show up?

  • ElaineW
    Original Author

Hi Trillium. We had over 100 people at the first and over 80 at the second swap. And many interesting things show up. Is there something you are interested in? If your name is any indication of your interests we do have widlflowers and other woodland plants come. I got a black cohash at the first swap. And someone brought lama manure last week. Not a plant but pretty interesting! I'm sorry I didn't get any but maybe next time.

Last Swap! On September 20th we'll have our last swap of the season. We have decided to make it a little more fun by having some food. Please bring any kind of finger food, appetizer or dessert. We'll set up a table and eat and swap.
We also have a request from the local teen center for some plants for their gardens, one of which is Tyler's Memorial Garden for a young man who passed tragically a few years ago. I guess we have a reputation for being generous gardeners. How true. See you Tuesday.
