Plant Swap 2006

Hi there,
Here is the plan for 2006. Usually the swaps are the first and third Tuesday of the month. But there are a couple of changes because July 4th falls on a Tuesday. We moved that swap to the 6th which is a Thursday. And we added April 23rd (Sunday) because we wanted to start with an "extra" swap for those who always have work on Tues. night or have other obligations. Can't wait to get started!

Where is it? 253 Warren Wright Rd. Belchertown, MA 01007

When? *On first and third Tuesday, May through September unless otherwise noted
*April 23, Sunday
May 2, May 16 (Not on May 30th)
June 6, June 20
July *6 Thursday, July 18
August 1, August 15 (Not on Aug. 29th)
September 5, September 19
6:00pm arrival/prep, 6:15 plant swapping begins (usually done by 7:30) Rain or Shine.

What to Bring? Perennials, annuals, vegetables, herbs, cuttings, fresh cut flowers, bulbs, seeds, etc.
$1.00 dues to cover costs- including a drawing for a plant. Bring a box or bucket in which to bring home your plants.

How Does This Work? At 6:00 people will arrive with their items to swap. The items will be placed on the ground in the area where well sit. You may want to bring a chair in case there are not enough. At 6:15 well name off all of the items to be swapped. It is very helpful if the items are labeled. Many bring shopping bags or buckets with freshly dug plants labeled with the plant name. Its not necessary to pot the plants youll bring- but you should try to keep the roots from drying out. YOU CAN BRING AS MANY OR AS FEW PLANTS AS YOUD LIKE. SOME GARDENERS ARE JUST STARTING AND MAY NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO SWAP. THAT IS OK! Many seasoned gardeners have more than enough to share and would rather give them away than throw them in the compost. There are many plants that do poorly unless they are divided regularly (irises, daisies, phlox, etc.) This is a great way to trade them for plants you may not have.

As soon as all of the plants are named people will be told to take their first pick. Each pick is a plant, not a full container. The first pick is offered to those who have brought an item from the "Wish List" that is kept of swappers wishes. Even if the person who wanted the plant is not there, if you brought a wish list item then you can be part of the first pick. If you are the recipient of a wish list plant then that is considered your first pick.
After everyone is done people will step back and then the second round will begin. Everyone is included in this round and all of the rest of the picks. This will be repeated as long as there are items left. It doesnt matter how many plants you bring. Everyone will have the same number of "picks". You may leave with a couple plants or with many depending on the contributions that week. Well finish with a raffle for a beautiful plant.

Other Notes: No dogs or smoking please. If you bring children try to make sure they are not disruptive.
Parking will be along Warren Wright Rd. - please be careful not to block the road or my neighbors driveways.
Feel free to spread the word, everyone is welcome.
Come a little early if youd like to browse through my gardens.

Elaine,
Thanks for posting this schedule! I'm new to this, but I plan to be there in April, trying to find homes for my extra seedlings!

Just a little over a month away...

RE: have: western ma swap 2006 schedule

Hi Emily,
You'll enjoy it. Everyone does. It's a blast to see your plants go to new homes and to find plants you may be looking for. I will be starting the wish list a couple of weeks before the first swap so you might want to think about a special plant you'd like to have.
I had a yard full of robins yesterday so it looks like spring is on its way.
See you in April, Elaine
