Thanks Claire! I had been thinking in terms of smaller/cheaper plugs or bare root trees, but that is definitely a place I need to go this Spring. They also sell American Beach Grass, another thing I was looking for.

There's also the various Massachusetts Conservation Districts where you can get small plant material that are well suited to our conditions. I haven't gotten plants from them but I've seen the Plymouth catalog in past years and they sold beach grass and other interesting plants.
...................................................................... ............................
"Massachusetts Conservation Districts hold tree
and plant sales each spring. Offerings vary by
District but may include: spruce, pine, birch,
dogwood, sugar maple and other tree seedlings;
ornamental grasses and ferns; ornamental
shrubs; ground covers; potted perennials; and
fruits, berries and perennial vegetables.

All items are reasonably priced and well suited
for reforestation, wildlife habitat improvement
and restoration and landscape ornamentation.
All proceeds from these sales go to finance
various activities of the Districts."

The Plymouth County Conservation District has a Facebook page which says
"We are now taking orders for “CAPE AMERICAN BEACH GRASS”
Deadline to order Beach Grass is March 28th
Pick-Up: first week in April"
and

"Our Annual Tree, Shrub & Plant Sale brochure is now available online...take a look!"

Unfortunately you apparently have to be on Facebook to access this page, at least I haven't found a non-Facebook (Face-less?) link.

I just got the flyer in the mail for the middlesex conservation district spring plant sale. I didn't see pitch pines, but there are other conifers and shrubs.

Here is a link that might be useful: Middlesex Conservation Spring 2014 Plant Sale
