I went with steel. Virtually no maintenance. I had a double wide door, Clopay, which is a good door. It was around $900 but that was a few years back. I got one row with windows, but I don't think that affects the price a great deal. I did not opt for an automatic opener at the time, so that is just the door and installation.

DH was a builder for many years. We have insulated steel doors on house and garage and they are definitely less maintenance and I think less weight. They do move in the winter so need weather-stripping. I don't like them as much aesthetically, but that may just be our particular doors.

True nothing has the warmth of wood, but depending on the style of your house, there are many designs in steel doors that can simulate a wood look very nicely and can compliment almost any style of home. May still be a minor trade off from real wood, but I think the benefits outweigh that. IMHO.

We have double insulated steel with a remote automatic garage door opener, and have been very pleased with them. They look like new a decade later. Our house is not really organic looking, so the doors blend well with its eclectic mix of building materials, but I would think that a coat of paint would make them look more natural. We left ours unpainted.

My past experience with wood is that it is great for interior use, but warps and deteriorates quickly when exposed to the elements, and only slightly less quickly when pressure treated.
