Dueling flower shows! Oh no!

The Connecticut spring flower show will be running at the same time as the Rhode Island one! Hmm.. Providence vs. Hartford.... I know that Providence vendors and services will be more available for my East Bay RI garden. But not for everyone here in NE gardening. The Mass. show is much later but if you join the society, you get a free ticket. So I'm thinking of going to 2 shows, RI and MA. How about the rest of you?

Here's the information on THREE different flower & garden shows, but the 3rd one, in MA, is much later.

Rhode Island show - Feb. 18-21 - www.flowershow.com
Connecticut show - Feb. 18-21 - www.ctflowershow.com
Mass. show - March 24-28 - www.masshort.org

Hartford and Philly this year. I would like to go check out RI one of these years though.

I'm going to miss the MA show, I'll be out of town at a meeting - no tears, though, it's in Paris.

I was hoping to finally make it to Philly, but now I think I'll just do RI - some good talks there on Friday, Feb 19 (including Paul Miskovsky and Julie Moir Messervey).

Steve Silk will be at the CT show ... hmmm, I've got one of his books around here somewhere. Long drive for me, though.

It is too bad the RI and CT shows must run the same weekend each year. Why do they do this?

We'll be going to the RI show. Be sure to check out a talk or two when there. We've enjoyed the talks we've attended at the RI show each year.

I complain every year that the CT and RI shows always fall on the same w/end. When will they learn that they could both make more money if they were at least a week apart. I live only 20 minutes from the CT show and have never been to the RI show since it is 2 hrs away and don't feel like doing both a day apart. I would go if it were a different w/end.

But, folks, the Philadelphia Flower Sowis NEVER a conflict. . .c'mon down !
(You may have noticed that it's part of our PHS membership contract to constantly shill for our show, , ,sorry, I'll be quiet now.)

Just a reminder, the PVD show started today. I'm going tomorrow, and I can't wait! Hope to see some familiar GW-NE faces at the Miskovsky and Messervy talks.

I went to the RI show on its first day (Thursday) and enjoyed it, but I wish it had more actual garden exhibits. The Miskovsky one was great, and I love the sandcastle guys, Sandtasia. This year their theme is the '60s and they've carved a spaceship etc., and the sandcarvers are wearing '60s tie-dyed t-shirts and long hair. Another wonderful garden set-up was of a memorial garden made by a husband of a woman who died. I don't know if it was true or was fiction, but it was really touching to read the account and then view the garden.

The one talk I attended was by Mike Chute who, with his wife Angelina, has written "Roses for New England", just published. Mike was a witty and informative speaker.

The various society (RI Rose Society, RI Wild Plant Society, etc.) booths had good informational pamphlets and advice, as usual. The commercial exhibits seemed to be roughly the same as last year's. I bought a bedsheet set for $20 and some of my favorite soap from the Sunny Windows lady, a few packets of seeds, and was on the road north by 4 PM. Not a wasted 5 hours, but a little thin compared to the Boston show. However, in mid February I need that hit of live plants and recorded birdsong, more than I need it by the end of March (which is when the Boston show happens).

Sounds like fun Carol. That talk on Roses would have been what I would have gone to. So what are the best roses for New England? [g]

Julie Moir Messervy's talk was excellent, as was Paul Miskovsky's. JMM, who lives in Vermont, has a web site now and is doing a lot of small residential gardens - including consulting via the web.

Both talks were very refreshing in that the designers didn't just show dramatic, huge, upscale gardens! JMM in particular showed several very average, maybe even below average (!) homes and yards and showed how they were transformed into lovely gardens.
