group order sunshine farm and nursery

Marie Tulin

If I can get enough people together I would like to do a group order from this company.

Disclaimer: I have not done business with them before.

The plant list that is available for this order. We need to stay on that list.

We may not have a final, final say in what comes. Barry will do his best to accomodate us, However, the plants have to be ordered in fives. You can order 5 for yourself, or arrange with someone to split up the five among you.

However, I can't keep track of how the fives are handled.

We need to be a little relaxed about this. First, I haven't done a group order before like this. But the plants come out to 2.50 each and no shipping and handling fees.

We get 5 plants each of 20 different plants.

I have not figured out how to handle the money. I think I will have to ask for payment when I order.

This is the website for the deal I'm interested:http://sunfarm.com/ordering/retail_sampler.phtml

Here are the plants for sale

Maybe we can pull this off! If any one has done this before, advice is welcome

Have you ordered from them before? And are they reliable? How do we get them to send these small partial orders of 5's to so many different addresses? I must tell you, their cheery chat style makes me wonder.

Idabean, I think I'd be interested. They have some interesting stuff. Do you know how it works? Do we really get to pick? On the web it said they pick for the sampler. I'd hate for it all end up being the commoner stuff like Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' . If you get enough interested let me know...I'd probably be interested in 20 or so plants, but it would be more ideal not to be limited to a lot of five, though I know that means more coordination.

    Hi Carol,
That was the other 'disclaimer' I meant to state. People will have to be willing to drive to my house in Lexington.
    What about this idea, Lisa:
Acknowledging the risk of some disappointment, we could order the plants we want the most, and have an on the spot swap out. For instance, if you ordered aruncus, and really wanted only 3, you'd have 2 to swap other people. You could arrange ahead of time to swap those two with other people, but that would be yours to facilitate.

I'm sure it would be a bit messy, but it could also be a lot of fun.

I'm going to check Garden Watchdog before I go any further.

Chatty tone...Barry Glick doesn't hold a candle to the guy at Plant Delights. He just waxes ridiculous!

OMG Marie - I don't want to be a downer, but did you read the negative feedback at Garden Watchdog? The most protracted rant came from a lady who did exactly what you are proposing and sounded like she wanted to go back in time and dope slap that very idea out of her own head by the end of her ordeal.

That being said, I HAVE done a group order of Helebores on a smaller scale from SG and it was OK. There were only three of us - Dee, another swapper friend and I. The plants were nice enough, but small as should be expected. Nothing that has inspired me to order from him again, but I wouldn't totally rule it out. I get their emails and laugh at their pricing because whether it is something exotic-ish or as common as Garlic chives he seems to charge the same two pricing structures for everything and presents it with the same huckster patter. Of course he also has some good growing information to impart also. He must really be a character in person.

Well, that gives me something to think about, Deb. I did look at Garden Watchdog, and he had 70+ and 11 negatives and some inbetween. my impression is that they really are small plants that should be potted on for best results.
It also seems when he drops the ball, it is a big time drop. His unhappy customers are really unhappy....and longwinded.

So, folks, you've heard Deb. Why don't you go read the reviews for yourselves and decide if you'd like to go along. Now I'm re-thinking also. It may be the better part of wisdom to just place a small order for the plants I can't get anywhere else, and give him a trial run.

But if enough people are willing to take a chance, I'm game.

Thanks, Deb, your experience was helpful.

    Hi,

I just wanted to let everyone know that I do volunteer work at Sunshine Farm. The plants are very nice and I am stocking my own greenhouse with them. Good luck to all of you.
