Somehow the 1st time my message didn't post. Sigh.
Anyway, is anyone planning to go to the Rhode Island Flower Show in Providence RI, Feb. 18-21? Interesting speakers and oh boy, the cold mid-February time is right for this! Check it out at www.flowershow.com - which is somehow specifically for the Rhode Island one.

| Thanks for reminding us about this event, Carol - the speaker list does in fact look great! I'm hoping to go on Friday, to see Messervy, Miskovski and Louis Raymond. I've never heard of Raymond before, but I'm curious after reading that he gave up a career in opera to work with plants. |

| The speakers at RI show are always excellent. It makes it worth it to attend a talk or two and then the show. Be sure not to miss the judges' comments on the judged portion of the show. We find it fun to see if we agree with the judges (or often Not!). You can see photos of RI last year at the link below. |

| We went yesterday for the first time. Nice show, and while very well attended it wasn't as claustrophobically crowded as the Boston flower show--I actually got into the restroom with only about a 30 second wait! I'd say it was about 1/3 the size of the Boston show. The exhibits were creative and had a nice variety. The marketplace was similar to the Boston one, but with perhaps fewer actual garden/plant-related vendors. I didn't go to any of the lectures or demo's because I wasn't sure if we'd run out of time, though as it turns out I could have. I do wish that some show, some year, would require exhibitors to only use plant material that's in bloom or at a stage of maturity equivalent to all the other material. In other words, no daffodils alongside of full-size hostas and full leafed trees. I always worry that novice gardeners or homeowners will get a very false idea of what's possible. |

That would be difficult, because different plants respond differently to forcing. What I'd like is for them to insist on regionally-hardy plants, forced or otherwise. One thing that always bothers me about flower shows is seeing orange trees next to rhodies. It would never happen "in real life" so why set it up in a show display? |
