Rosebay rhodie under hemlocks is dying

Hello:

Three years ago, we bought a large Rosebay rhododendron and planted under a group of hemlocks, where it gets morning sun for several hours. It has never flourished and now the leaves are drooping and yellow, and there are no buds.

Other plants seem to do all right there, hostas, even strawberries. But could the hemlocks be poisoning the shrub? The ground is very rocky, however, so I wonder if that is the problem. Nevertheless, we do have several other rhododendrons in the yard.

The root ball was pretty large. We dug a wide hole and planted it on hard earth (rather than digging a huge, deep hole, and partly re-filling it with compost and soil, as we once did). How deeply do these roots go anyway? What causes the yellow leaves? Sometimes I've wondered if we've over-watered it, but it's a big shrub and rhodies can take some extra moisture, can't they? Perhaps I under-watered it, but I did water it weekly.. The other rhodies are properly green, so I'm puzzled why this one is so sickly

Many thanks. This was a big investment (alas) and I hope we don't lose it.
