No sign at all here in NH. This is a new patch we started last year and ... I picked a very wet spot which I didn't realize at the time until we had such a rainy summer. I read that asparagus doesn't like wet feet.

I think there's ONE spear ready to pick in one of my patches. These are volunteers, which I grow for the lovely foliage, but I might just go out and cut that beautiful spear and eat it. Course, I won't tell anyone...

Some day I plan to dig these up and put them in an actual vegetable garden. Just as soon as I get the shrubs and trees out of that space...

Question - I planted the asparagus bed last spring, so this is year 2. Can I pick asparagus this year? Or do I have to wait for year 3?

pixie I bought mine from Jersey Asparagus they were 3 year old plants and the first 2-3 years were so-so. Now in mine 5,6,7 years they are amazing. Let some of the fatter ones grow from time to time.

I totally forgot to pick my asparagus this year. Seems like one day they were just peeking out of the ground. And by the time I checked them again, they were 2 feet tall and ferning. Oh well. There is always next year.

I did the same thing with mine. Mine are still young and really don't offer enough for a meal. I started with seedlings which seem to be taking forever to produce. I was wondering, do they actually need to be cut to make them produce more?
