Frittilarias--finally

I have always thought fritillarias--the yellow crown imperials--were stunning flowers but never tried them. I finally bought three at Thanksgiving about five years ago and discovered that they were difficult to grow. First, I bought them too late--they are supposed to go in the ground as soon as available.

They need to be planted with a bed of sharp sand under them, in perfectly drained soil, and at an angle so the hole in them does not collect water and rot them.

I did all that--in early December--way too late. Three came up and one bloomed. I was thrilled. Since then, only one returns each year but never blooms.

This year I have two budded flowers on that plant! It's only one plant but I am really excited. Just had to tell some fellow gardeners....
