More About Alfalfa

The current issue of "The Avant Gardener" opens with a paean (sp?) to alfalfa, so recently mentioned here. I merely quote snippets: "Mulching or digging in chopped alfalfa or alfalfa meal or pellets has produced improved growth of plants from peonies and roses to perennials and vegetables...Alfalfa tea, made by steeping two pounds of meal or pellets in 5 gallons of water for about two weeks, makes a superior fertilizer for seedlings to mature plants of all kinds...Much grown as a green manure is 'Nitro,' a new annual alfalfa that grows late into the fall and produces 50% more nitrogen than perennial alfalfa; a source is Johnny's Selected Seeds (955 Benton Ave, Winslow, ME, 04901)." I'm sure Johnny is on the Web as well, if you prefer to order that way. I like the idea of a green mulch to compete with my healthy crop of weeds!
