larkspur lifetime?

Having failed to get seed started for this year, I bought plants of Blue Mirror and belladonna x bellamosum with buds on already. Can I do anything to help them come back next year?

I remember having Blue Butterflies several years ago (in a different, definitely z6 garden); they flowered like crazy over a long period but then did not overwinter. I subsequently read that the chinese hybrids should be treated like annuals. Maybe biennial is more accurate? Maybe they need serious deadheading? Maybe they need super good drainage, or shade? I also remember reading that some unrelated species was prone to flowering itself to death & needs to have the FLOWER stalks cut back. I guess the final option is to treat them like the foxgloves (purpurea alba) and rely on self sowing.
