I wish I knew which salvia this was. It is much darker than the others I have.

Thanks for posting.
Last I saw your yard was at the fall plant swap. What a difference one season makes!
Lovely

gorgeous!!! That salvia is breathtaking... and the cornus and the abies concolor... I am growing two young abies... I wonder how long it will take to see a cone.

Beautiful!! I love the color.

Lisa your garden is so beautiful. The weigela is gorgeous! What is the evergreen 2 photos below the weigela photo? I think your salvia may be May night. It looks a lot like mine. I have a few varieties of blue perennial salvia and May night is definitely the darkest. It also blooms earlier than the others. Are there flowers in the mid-section of your cornus?

Wow,
Your garden is beautiful! I love your Abies and Cornus. Is that a ground cover Juniper in front of the Weigela? Your Ajuga is wonderful, sadly it is a real pest in my yard it has traveled now into my lawn and woodland. Thanks for sharing.

RE: A few more pictures

You guys are sweet. I always compare my garden to the amazing photos posted here and find it lacking, but it is comforting to get positive feedback.

Wendy - I am not sure how old the Abies is. I bought it two years ago and it has put a foot of growth on in that time (it's about 6' now). This is the first year it has coned and I am thrilled with the color. The photo doesn't show the truly blazing purpleness of it.

Susan - I was very happy with how the Weigela looks this year. The conifer is Tsuga canadensus 'Moon Frost'. It's a typical dwarf hemlock mostly, but the new growth positively glows. I think you might be right on the 'May Night' I do remember buying one now. It is just perfect with the daisys. And yes there are flowers on the dogwood, but they really aren't showy which is fine by me.

KT - So far the Ajuga hasn't spread too rapidly and eventually when I get the walkway put in it will be completely isolated. The Juniper is blue pacific, and I will probably move it. It seems too prone to taking over too much real estate there.

Thanks again for the kind words. I get almost no feedback from friends and neighbors, so it's good to hear I'm doing some things right!

Really nice, Lisa! It looks great! I do love those conifers - something I'm just getting onto now, after all these years (I just need more land ...)

Why do you think your friends and neighbors don't say much? ARe they not gardeners? I'll never forget when a new friend came over for lunch. She looked around the garden briefly, and it was clear she could not have been less interested. I wasn't really hurt, but I realized I have come to expect people to say something, because they nearly always do. It is just very very difficult for me to understand folks who have no interest in a garden.

RE: A few more pictures

I think it's a few different reasons. For one, this is a new garden, most items are two years old or less, so I have no large drama plants, no show-stoppers. Plus I don't think I have a strong overall sense of design. I don't do rivers of color or drifts, i.e., nothing that is really attention getting. I think I have a ok sense of what works with plant combos, but to see it, you really have to be standing in the garden, which most visitors don't do. Also, I have tended to chose plants that most people aren't familiar with. It took me 5 years to decide I should have a rhododendron in my garden, just because there is one in every yard in the neighborhood, so I didn't think I wanted one.

We have a very friendly neighborhood and people take walks by my house all the time when I am out weeding or planting, but no-one has ever stopped to ask what a plant is or to make a comment. I have two little kids and have moms over regularly for playdates, but we will almost never talk about the garden. My Mom and Dad are gardeners and I have one mom-friend who gardens, so it's always fun to visit with them, but other than that, I have to get my garden conversations here on the forum. Thank goodness for you guys!

Lisa

I have always found it interesting when folks say nothing about my garden...heck they have to walk through it to get to my door, but then I thought about how totally disinterested I am in cars, I can rarely identify makes or models which is a big disappointment to my husband who has a mid-life vintage car. Frankly if I walked up to someone’s home with a *unique/special* car in the driveway I likely wouldn't say anything to the owner because;
a) I wouldn't recognize it as anything special.
b) I would be too busy looking at their landscaping.

RE: A few more pictures

Mainly people walking by my house say "wow, that looks like a lot of work!" which isn't especially rewarding as far as feedback goes. A close friend who's a gardener often visits, and her main comments tend to run towards the number of dandelions in my lawn. On the other hand, she often leaves with a trunk-load of plants, so I guess that's my reward.

Katy's point is right on the mark. Most people think of gardening as a chore, too, so besides the lack of interest they're just focused on how much they think they'd dislike having to take care of a big garden. That's not to say they don't enjoy seeing it, maybe they just don't relate to our enjoyment of garden-building.
