National Free Public Gardens Day

Friday, May 6 is National Free Public Gardens Day - as the name suggests, you get free admission to public gardens that day (I believe you need to sign up, somewhere on the Better Homes and Gardens web site (link is on the page at the URL below) - I haven't done it myself).

I did a search on the link below and got a list of places closest to me.

Polly Hill Arboretum, West Tisbury, MA

Blithewold, Bristol, RI

Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain

Massachusetts Hort, Wellesley, MA

Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA

NEWFS Garden in the Woods, Framingham, MA

Long Hill Reservation/Sedgwick Garden, Beverly, MA

Connecticut College Arboretum, New London, CT

UConn, Storrs, CT

Since when is there an admission fee to enter the Arnold Arboretum? (I've been away too long!)

Arnold Arboretum is free. As is Mt. Auburn Cemetary in Cambridge and Mass Hort Society in Wellesley. Not sure why they are on the list.

At this time of year, the $$ is less of a pressing issue than taking the time to go visit these gardens, at least for me.

Still, I like the idea that this might encourage people to visit public gardens more. If the organization includes gardens that are free anyway, that doesn't bother me too much. What bothers me more is that you have to give your name and address (or email) to Better Homes and Gardens. I think I'd rather pay to visit the gardens than risk getting BHG spam.
