Must move gardenia - OK to transplant now?

My young gardenia, planted only 2 months ago and thriving ( bloomed already) is getting shadowed and smothered by large bushy perennials growing bigger all around it. My bad - I didn't allow for the spring growth of the globe thistle, iris clump, day lilies, physostegia and phlox. So I must move the gardenia, still small, to a more spacious location. Those other perennials are all established and I had forgotten how they fill that area.
My question: can I move the gardenia right now, or should I wait until, say, September? Seems to me that since it's so new, the roots will not have grown much into the new ground, so this might be the best time to get it out of the incipient jungle?
