| A friend gave us some of her "primrose" which we planted in various spots in our yard. Its been rather slow to establish over the past four years and is nicely confined, perhaps having spread a foot or two in all directions since. I always thought primrose was invasive and spread like kudzu. Also, this is low growing, perhaps, 10 inches tall at most.
Can someone tell me what this is exactly? Thanks! |

| It's an Oenothera, not a Primula. I don't know which species, but it is very commonly grown around here. |

| The common name for Oenothera is evening primrose and as Mad Gallica said, that is what you have. IME it does spread around through underground stems, rather like mint, but there are several varieties and I am not sure if they are all rampant spreaders. It may also depend on how happy it is with your conditions, such things as light levels, soil pH, and moisture levels. (Primrose, scientific name Primula, is a different type of plant that spreads only by seed if at all, IME.) |

| i have what looks like the same stuff growing in a hosta that has needed to be divided and moved for a while... I thought it was some type of loosetrife. |
