Garden visits, York County, Maine (photo heavy)

I visited the four gardens in York County, Maine, yesterday that were listed as Open Gardens by the Garden Conservancy. All had lovely stone work and while each had its own character, they all had a striking combinations of woodies and perennials.

Three of the four had pools, with two of them nicely integrated into the garden.

Three of the four were right on the coast. The one I didn't take photos of had in different areas either large hickories and cedars giving shelter from salt winds or meadows between the house and the coast, and its gardens looked tucked into the scenery and to scale with the long views. The other two coastal gardens had lovely gardens, but when one looked at them with the ocean in view, the gardens seemed to me to be totally overwhelmed by the shear immensity of the ocean view, so I ended up taking most of my photos with my back to the ocean.

The garden not on the coast was set into a large cleared area in thick woods. There was shade from the house and from a vine-covered pergola, tidy beds for ornamentals and veggies edged in granite with gravel paths, and some lovely paving and ornaments.

Lovely. I know what you mean about viewing the breadth of the ocean as it nearly obscures a gardener's work, but that 3rd picture is a beauty. And the timing is interesting; my alliums have been gone for at least 3 weeks. So good of you to share, thanks.

Looks like a wonderful tour! There were so many garden tours this past weekend and I couldn't go on any since I was already committed. The weather was perfect and York County is so close. Have my fingers crossed for next year.

It was a gorgeous day, and warmer than I expected along the coast, with just a light breeze. All 4 gardens were just north of Portsmouth, NH, in York, ME (just off exit 7 on I-95 in ME); 3 of them in the Cape Neddick area and one less than 5 miles south. There were quite a number of MA license plates that I noticed.

Jane, that third photo is the only one including the ocean where the gardens were really visible against the water. The photo here with Alliums is just seedheads, but at least one of the gardens had shorter (~18") Alliums with huge irregular heads that were still blooming amongst the hostas.

I am looking at going to a second one this coming week-end since it's based in Concord, NH, and surrounding towns, just a few minutes from home.

Such beautiful gardens! And definitely perfect weather...seeing other gardens always amaze me - so many different personalities and plants...thank you for sharing!

Wonderful gardens and such a lovely day. I kind of agree.... living so close to the ocean, with a view of both the sea and the sky as in your second and third photos, would make gardens seem insignificant. Thank you for allowing me to "join" you on this GC Open Days.
