Acorn squash are the Barbie dolls of the garden: they have all the contours and colors of a mature adult (squash) when they are only half-grown. So my problem is: how do I know when they are ripe to harvest? Some of them are fist-size, but maybe they should be melon-size? I certainly don't need them right now (being in the middle of a glut of zucchini, eggplants and garlic), so I'd like to wait. Can I wait a month to harvest those acorns? What are the symptoms of acorn squash maturity?
