Aphids attacking lupine?

We bought this house last July but didn't officially move in til August, so though we were in and out in July, we didn't spend a ton of time in the garden. I do remember the lupine all around the patio; but I also seem to remember the leaves staying healthy and green through the fall.

Our lupine bloomed beautifully but about a week ago, I noticed, all of a sudden, a lot of drooping leaves and bare stems...I took a closer look and the plants were covered in aphids. I've never seen anything like that before - in NY, roses and my honeysuckle were primary aphid feeding grounds.

I purchased some ladybugs and released them late last week, and I am not seeing that many aphids now.

Is this a common thing? Should I be doing anything to keep what plants are left? A lot of the plants are just looking so sad, and I think a few have definitely lost the battle.
