Anyone growing Vinca in hanging pot in Zone 5?

I like to grow flowers for a hanging pot for my mother each year, from seed (though I've tried nursery grown ones too). However, she either over waters them or somehow they end up fried or bloom-less by August. The spot gets sun until 2 pm, so it should be ideal for most sun loving flowers.

Here's my thought: how about vinca/periwinkle? It sounds like a tough enough plant, since it looks like a New Guinea impatiens, that's a bonus.

Any thoughts? Or should I just get a NG impatiens?
