Sunflower help/Bugs

I have a row of about 20-30 giant sunflowers in my back yard. They have grown to about 6 feet now and will hopefully soon be flowering. The problem I have is the leaves are being eaten. I notice little black ants crawling along the leaves and little tiny flies occasionally landing on them as well. I heard that the ants are there because of Aphids. What the web sites do not explain is if this is a bad thing or not. Should I just leave well enough alone? The stalks and everything are fine but all the chewed up leaves makes the plant look kinda, lets say, not so good.
