Tiny holes in all (600) hostas???

What is this? I've got tiny holes in every single variety of hosta (about 30 varieties)--at first I thought it was slugs, but now.... Some of them are the 'brown'thatched --not totally holes, yet, but most of them are holes.
This has happened suddenly--in the space of about 10 days--on all different sides of the house--so it doesn't look like something has spread from one infected plant.
Of course, we've had gobs and gobs of rain and cooler than usual temps, but...
Any ideas? |

| OK-thinking back--about a week to 10 days ago I did a major spray of SNG on ALL my plants-- Could THAT have caused burning on the hosta leaves? |

| Are you sure you didn't have a hail storm? |

| Did you ever find out what the holes were from? I also had them on most of my hostas. They came pretty suddenly in the spring. I never had holes in my hostas like these before (at least that I noticed) - small holes over all of them. I didn't spray or do anything to them before. I was too busy to do anything about them then, but am wondering if there is something pro active to do this fall. |

| Well, mine were covered by slugs with all of the rain. I would still suspect them. Maybe a photo would help. There is a virus spreading among hosta. It does not mention tiny spots, but it does count mottling. http://plant-disease.ippc.orst.edu/factsheet.cfm?RecordID=1401&rec_type=disease Take a look at the leaf photo on the link above. |

| Just getting back here. evonnestroyteller - thanks for the link to the hosta virus. It's good for everyone to know about. I had a plant with the virus last year. Luckily I identified it quickly from the information on the Hosta Forum and destroyed the plant. It wasn't near any other hostas and at least so far hasn't spread to any others. The hostas are gone for the season. If I get the holes next year I'll look for slugs and come back here with pics sooner. |

Just read this thread so sorry for a late response. Something to keep in mind for next year. I have quite a few varieties of hosta around, most NOIDs that were gifts from various garden friends. Last year two rows of hosta that line my front walk about 10 feet on each side were spotted yellow, perfect round spots that didn't pierce the leaves. This spotting literally happened overnight. The night before we had gone to a neighbors house for a BBQ and the leaves were clear, next morning spotted...hmmm, realized we had sprayed ourselves with "OFF" mosquito repellent and it spotted the leaves overnight. Any chance a repellent of some kind was sprayed around your hosta? Yard guard also spotted some of the older thinner leaved types here as well. I stopped using yard guard to save the bees and beneficial insects a while ago but wanted to pass the info along. |

| chazparas - I've heard that about Off, that it damages foliage on many garden plants and outright defoliates some of them. Strong stuff, I guess! |
