It may or may not. We had a couple for many years at our previous house, just north of Concord, NH, and about 20 miles SSW of Center Harbor. Some of the varieties are hardier than others. I think it's the blues that tend to be least hardy. We had one that was white with pink and a dark red one. If you decide to try it, be sure to warn the recipient that it may not leaf out until almost June.

There are/were some very nice ones on the south side of CRREL in Hanover NH Z4b. They were protected by the building I believe. I've never tried them in my garden in Lebanon cuz I don't have aprotected place. A friend of mine had one in Claremont z5a, but it died after several years, out in the open.

I brought a plant back from MO a couple years ago and it's doing fine, but hasn't bloomed yet this year (they are already blooming in MO, same zone). I just brought more back and will plant them shortly.

I have five Rose of Sharon which are 5 and 6 feet tall. Most of them I grew from seed and they are doing fine. In fact so fine that I have to pull up all the seedlings that appear every year in the spring. I gave one seedling that grew into a bush (before I could pull it up) to a friend in Sunapee and hers is doing fine as well.
