Oh, those images make me so sad. Before we moved up to MA, we lived about 45 minutes from Longwood Gardens. I had an annual membership there, took classes and visited at least a dozen times every year. I really miss it!

Thank you for posting these photos. I am from the Philly area, but left in 1969, living in Mass since 1978. I miss Longwood, as well. I love the fountains and the roses.

I will show my daughter the large platform waterlilies, as she loved the same species at Kew Gardens.

Lovely, gorgeous photos. The water lilies are really astonishing. One question: why doesn't the dye in the water tint the blossom? Just thinking back to the old days of adding blue food coloring to carnations in a vase and watching them turn blue....

LOL! That fuzzy raspberry is an Oriental invasive called "wineberry".

I grew up five minutes from Longwood Gardens and have more fond memories of the place than I can count! Exposure to it was one of the reasons I majored in horticulture.

Oh, the reason the dye doesn't tint the flowers is that the plants never take up the dye. When you place a cut flower stem into water containing a dye, the dye is taken directly into the plant tissue, but if there are no cut stems the plant isn't likely to take in the dye unless it can come in through the roots. Obviously this dye must not do that.
