South Shore Natural Science Center tour today

My friend and I went on the SSNSC tour today, and enjoyed 6 fantastic gardens in Hanson, Pembroke, and Norwell. I have to say one thing disturbed me though: 3 of the gardens were growing lythrum...otherwise known as puple loosestrife. This is a horribly invasive water plant that you see along wet roadsides...and is illegal to sellin many states. Even the named varieties are bad. Would you grow this plant?

I might have gone on that tour if it had been on a weekend. I am surprised too. I try to stay away from any plant that even suggests that it may escape my garden and make it in the wild. I am tolerant of some agressive spreaders that I have to keep controlled so they don't overrun my garden. I reserve the word invasive for those plants that really get into natural spaces and purple loosestrife is one of the most famous of these.

Hello CapeCodder,
You can see these plants in Sunny wetlands, Around ponds and ditches, Wet prairies, Along streams and Moist fields and pastures. The root-mining weevil lays eggs into the stem of the Loosestrife and the developing larvae work their way down into the roots where they feed extensively on the root tissue. Also, the adult weevils feed on newly formed leaves.

Thank You.

Oh dear, we've been spammed; and, from India!

Anyway, I'd contact SSNSC and let them know you noticed this. It's probably a dilemma for them, they raise funds by holding the garden tour and they're not in a position to complain to the people who volunteer to open their gardens.

Me, no, I wouldn't grow lythrum. On the other hand, I have creeping jenny (golden) and that's on the list as well, so I don't feel especially virtuous!

Well I grow purple loosestrife - after a fashion.

I have a swamp. It grows in the swamp. It was in the swamp when we bought the house, and since it really hasn't spread much at all, it's fairly low on the to-do-list to do anything about. The Amur honeysuckle, garlic mustard, and multiflora are all much higher up than the loosestrife. Actually, watching the purple loosestrife over the years has left me with the distinct impression that it really doesn't stand a chance against the more aggressive swamp dwellers.
