I've always wanted to put down fresh sod - one of these days maybe I'll do it. The thought of getting rid of the existing weeds is so tempting...

Some people swear by adding grass seed to existing lawns, but I think that the conditions seeds need to germinate are too different from what "adult" grass itself needs for this to work well. Maybe sod, since it requires a lot of water at first, would be ok, but it also seems to me that sod will be too thick for the new seedlings to make enough progress to take hold.

Can you find out what types of grass are in the mix in the sod that's available? I'd guess that it contains very adaptable grasses, and that it would thrive in at least part-shade conditions.

Yes, I'd think that the people who sell sod should have this info. Or they can tell you where the sod farm is and you can ask there.
