post-Irene: early autumn?

After the hurricane, I wrote that certain shrubs were affected, showing shriveled leaves. Now, I can see many more signs of salt water and high wind: almost all the trees in the neighborhood are losing leaves which have dried up and shriveled, and most of the remaining leaves show brown dried areas. The only plants that seem to be unaffected are the hydrangeas and the asters, and honeysuckle and bittersweet, fierce tough weeds here.

There's nothing I can do, but I'm hoping we don't get new growth from the trees now, which would take energy away when they need to get ready for the winter.

This isn't just an early autumn, is it? It's stress?
