sounds like our lawn. Here in NH we got almost enough rain. There were times when I had to water the vegetable garden but not many unless seeds were germinating. Our neighbor seeded the new hayfield (was corn) recently and we think there was just enough rain. The field is on a slope so he hoped there wouldn't be a heavy rain that would wash $500 worth of seed away. One year he had to plant a field three times.

I'm excited for the fact that the rain has come at the most crucial times this summer. Especially on days like today, when the heat seems to be sucking all of the moisture from the soil, we'll get a deep raining (soon). I've had to water a few of the dryer spots in the garden, but some of the seedlings that have simply sprouted from the garden beds is unbelievable.

It's much better than last year, when there was intense heat, little water, and I didn't mulch nearly as thick as I should have..

You and I have the same kind of "lawn" (LOL). I often refer to it in my columns as our "so-called lawn." A colleague from Garden Writers Association often chides me and says I should get rid of it. She doesn't understand that I actually enjoy it, especially when I play croquet with our grandson and other neighborhood children. A garden instead of lawn would not work. The weeds do not impede the croquet balls.
