Dog worries

I'm tired of fighting the "burning" left by neighborhood dogs that are "walked" on my property. I'm considering making a border around my yard and was wondering if anyone knew of a certain mulch that will repel dogs or certain plants that they dislike. Thanks for any help.

We have the same problem. We live close to 3 marinas and the boaters walk their dogs by our house letting them use our yard as a bathroom. We are in the process now of lasagning this area and will plant a mixed shrub border w/rugosa roses (beach roses) along the street side of the border. In a couple years, those thorns should disuade them...

I also thought of something thorny or dense to discourage them. Keep in mind that if there is a shrub there, they will lift their little legs and whizz right on the shrubs. My mother dealt with this problem in her little front-yard cottage garden by erecting an inexpensive 3 foot tall picket fence to keep them out. The garden is still visible, air circulation and sun not completely excluded, and they don't seem to like peeing on the fence. I don't know of any mulch that repels dogs. I also have a lot of dog walkers on my street, and I put up little no-pooping signs that I made up and laminated until they got the message. Or at least most of them.

My neighbor has for eight years allowed (encouraged) their large Golden Retriever to relieve himself evey morning on my property. I chose to ignore it until this fall when the dog started aggressively going after me thinking I was the tresspasser on his territory. I spoke to animal control officers who for the most part shugged their shoulders. Then I planted a hedge of rosa rogusa that I have high hopes will define borders this spring. I'll keep you posted.
